Happy Summer!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful school year!   I have really felt fortunate to have had such a great group of students and such supportive and helpful parents.  Thank you all for your very generous gifts, your thoughtfulness is appreciated.

Just a reminder that you can still access the blog all summer so therefore can link to Raz Kids, Spelling City, ABCYA and also the Xtra Math  so that your child could get some educational screen time!  All those accounts are active for the entire summer.

Hope you all have a fantastic fun-filled summer!   See you in September, your child will be in their old classroom for at least the first couple of days.

Lice!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but please check your child's head regularly for the next few weeks as there are reported cases in ours and a couple other classes. No fun I know but the sooner you catch it the better.

June 10th

Division 7 has had a very fun week.  On Tuesday we studied more about octopuses (or octopi - I googled it and actually both are okay to use) and then we made these cool octopuses out of dough!  Thanks to Quinn's mom for finding the idea and Mason and Marco's mom for making the dough and helping us create them.  Everyone loved making them and many loved eating them too!

Our field trip was awesome!  Thanks to all the parents who were able to join us, we literally had a 2 child to 1 adult ratio!  Highlights of the boat trip were driving the boat, seeing the seals, sea lions and learning about  the different animals/birds that live in the area and the different resources (like lumber and sulfur) we saw that are being exported.

The students have brought home their spelling and Poetry books, these can be kept at home as we won't be using them again this year.  Don't forget you could continue to use the Spelling City link on this blog to continue to practice spelling even over the summer.  Over the  next couple of weeks please check your child's backpack daily as we will be starting to send supplies (used and new) home. Thanks.

Parent volunteers needed!  If you would be willing to take a tub or two of manipulatives home to wash that would be really appreciated, just let me know.  Thanks so much!!

Mindfulness day is on Monday.  Please wear your kindness counts t-shirts or pink, black or yellow.
Fun day is on Friday and volunteers are still needed.  Please send a note if you are available thanks.

June 3

I can't believe it is June!

Next Monday and Tuesday will be the last treat days of the year.  Bring your loonies Monday and Tuesday if you'd like chips, Freezies or Popsicles.   Thanks to everyone who sent in money for change for change - Div. 7 did make a difference.

Our scientists are winding down, this week we had Tessa, Eli, Makayla, Gianna and Layton.  We had traveling water, learned about primary and secondary colours plus how salt acts like a blanket to hold up an egg, how to make a rain cloud and quick sand.

This morning we had Quinn's dad Mark come and talk to us about the port of Vancouver.  Ask me what all I learned about this port!

On Thursday we had a special guest Katleen Williamson.  She read us a great Aboriginal story and we then painted these cool salmon.

Our field trip is on Thursday, June 9th.  We will be sending a note home a couple days prior with all the information and what you'll need to bring.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate with us!  Thanks to everyone who has signed up, paid and volunteered to come and to/or drive.  Please remember parents that are joining us for the boat tour there is $10 charge which you need to send in and we will cover it with one cheque from Fairview.  Please let me know if you do plan to join us or just drive.

May 27th

Div. 6 and 7 did an awesome job performing April Showers today at the assembly.

Chase, Quinn, Ava and Eva were our scientists this week and once again all their experiments were enjoyed by everyone. The students are really learning about different chemical reactions.

We finished our kites this week with our big buddies.  Thanks to Mrs. Carpenter for her help to assemble these.  We are all very excited to try and fly these, our fingers are crossed that they will actually fly.

This week we made these real cool fish which we will be sending to Cinplex Meadowtown for a contest for the new movie 'Finding Dory'.  Our fish will be displayed in the theatre for the promotional event on June 18th.  If any families have a chance to go to this opening it will be from 12 - 4 pm that Saturday.

Fairview's Fun day is on Friday, June 17th volunteers are needed please return the green forms or just a note if you are available to help out.  Thanks, also if anyone has any balloons they could donate could you please send them in.

Change for change is all next week.  Please bring in any change to give people in Equador clean water.  Thanks for helping others.

May 19th

Today pizza was enjoyed by everyone in Div. 7!  I was very proud that our class won this prize for their great reading for the month of April.

Our Scientists again this week were great.  Thanks to Ashton, Mallary, Charlotte and Mason for some more neat experiments.   Please note we are doing this weeks spelling Lesson 12 over two weeks so the test will be next Friday.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is a Pro D day and then Monday is Victoria Day.  Enjoy your long weekend!  Hopefully we see some sunshine!

On Tuesday, May 24th is our assembly that we will be performing April Showers please remind your child to wear rain colours blue, gray or light green.  The assembly is at 8:45 am.

Assembly change! Now May 27th

Just wanted everyone to know that the assembly has been changed to Friday, May 27th at 8:45 so this is the day you'll need to wear rainy colours!  Friday is also twin day for those students who want to participate.

Enjoy your long weekend!

May 13th

Lucky Friday the 13th!  We had one final gymnastics session with Mrs. Saunders as you can see it was lots of fun!

Our special Pizza lunch for winning the most club RED members will be on Thursday, May 19th.  Each student will get two pieces of pizza so please send additional snacks to go with this.  Thanks

We have continued our ocean theme and everyone seems to be really enjoying it and we are learning lots!  Please sign up for field trip as soon as possible plus I wanted to let you know that siblings will not be allowed on this trip.  It is going to be a very long and busy day and with the boat trip we feel it will is not appropriate for toddlers.  Thanks for your understanding with this.

We again had some very cool science experiments this week! Good job Haldan, Adam, Ella and Cassi.  Thanks to Cassi and her mom we have some new telephones which we can experiment with!

On May 24th Div 6/7 will be performing April Showers at an assembly.  Could everyone try to wear blues and greys and rainy colours this is the Tuesday after the long weekend so please mark this on your calendars.

We are making kites with our big buddies which the students are all very excited about.

May 6th

Our Club RED celebration was a big success, we are proud to announce that our class had the highest percentage of Club Red members in the whole school.  We won the pizza lunch.  I will let you know when this be.

Just a reminder that each week the student get a new spelling list and an activity to go with it.  They need to have this completed by Friday so if they come home with it on Wednesday or Thursday please ensure that they finish this.  Thanks for your help.

Our Scientists Kevin, Marco, Kate and Zander did a great job of their science projects this week.
We are all looking forward to seeing everyone's different experiments.

Just another reminder to sign up on the portal for our field trip to Rocky Point.

If anyone has any ribbon they would like to donate to the class please send it in.  Thanks we are in the process of making jellyfish!

Hope you all have a wonderful Mother's Day and weekend.  The students all worked very hard and were excited about their gifts for you.  Relax and enjoy - you deserve this!

April 29th

Wow it is already the end of April.  Division 7 has been busy!
All students should have brought home information about their Scientist of the day, if the date doesn't work for you please let me know and we can make adjustments.  These will start next week, if you'd like to come for this let me know and I will try to organize a time that works.
Forest fun is always a popular activity on Tuesday.

These students designed a coat hanger.
 Friends in the woods!

We are very fortune to have Charlotte's mom teaching us gymnastics!  We had lots of fun both Monday and Friday learning different balance, core and gymnastic skills.

On Thursday we played Man Tracker with our big buddies!   Today with Mrs. Roberts class we learned about 3 different regions in Canada that the First Nations people settled. We learned about what the land was like, what grew there and what animals lived there which then dictated what the people ate, the type of travel and shelter as well as their clothing.

Just a reminder that Club RED finishes tomorrow so students need to return calendars on Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest.  Our celebration will be on Friday, students should try to wear something red.  Thanks for all your support parents with all our special days.

These pictures are from explorations.  These are a few representations of Canada that the students made!

April 22 - Earth Day

Happy Earth Day - the students worked very hard this morning to write these great stories using 6 different pictures for Earth Day.  Each group presented their story to the class and then later we read the actual Chris Van Allsberg 'Just a Dream'.

Our computer lab is still out of commission but we are excited that we will be starting a gymnastics unit with Charlotte's mom. For the next couple of weeks on Monday and Fridays we will have a variety of gymnastic stations!

Just a reminder that if you go to the link Spelling City link on this blog it is an excellent way to practice the spelling each week.   Usually we do this in the lab but unfortunately we are not able to do this so it would be great if you are doing this at home.  Also don't forget about our Xtra Math which I gave to you at the conference, we only have about 6 students that have tried this great practice tool!

You should have received an message on the portal about our boat trip on June 9th.  Please sign up soon and if paying by cash you can send it.  Thanks

A tower of cups!!

April 15th

Thank you so much to all the parents that drove for Peter Pan.  The play was enjoyed by all.  Some of the students really liked getting autographs of the performers after the play.

On Wednesday we got together with Mrs. O'Riordan's class to make bees.  This was a follow up activity after Mason brought in some Mason Bees.  They are very interesting and Mason and his family keep them in their backyard every spring/summer and in their fridge in the winter.

Everyone mark your calendar for Thursday, June 9th as that is going to be our year end field trip.  Next week we will be starting our ocean unit and this trip includes a boat trip from Rocky Point.  This  trip should be on the portal on Monday.

Thank you.  The play is suppose to be 1 1/2 hours so we should be back right around 2:20 but may be a few minutes late.

Mark your calendars June 9th we have our year end field trip - this will be up on the portal next week!  We will once again need parent drivers - thank you in advance for your continued support.

April 6th

Today I sent home your child's report card, these are for you to keep.  Grandparent cards were sent home today so if you could please deliver or mail these that would be appreciated.  Yesterday they also brought home their Superflexbooklets, please go over this with your child and have them explain each character.  This is a great program to help students with self regulation.  They can keep these booklets at home.  Thursday and Friday, April 7 & 8th are treats days which the PAC has organized so if your child brings $1.00 they could buy Popsicles or chips.
DRIVERS are still needed for our Peter Pan field trip on Thursday, April 14th.  Also many students have not yet signed up on the portal please do so ASAP thanks
Don't forget PJ day is on Friday!

April 1st

It is already April and this fabulous weather is definitely letting us know it is spring.  A huge thank to Mason's mom for treating the class to Popsicles today they were enjoyed and appreciated!

I have updated the calendar on this blog so please check it out.

Club RED (Read Every Day) started today - your child should have brought home a letter and you need to start reading today!  Please note all our special activity days that are part of club RED.

Our field trip to Peter Pan is on Thursday, April 14th.  Please sign up on the portal.  We do need drivers so please let me know if you can help out.  Again thank you in advance.

For spelling this week I have started to mark words wrong if they add capitals.  We have talked about this so much that I am hoping this encourages them to be more careful.  Lesson 6 next week is a review so we will be testing on 15 words instead of the usual 5.   In their planners they will only record half of the words but they are all on Spelling City or if you want your child to bring home their duotangs just tell them.

Also if anyone has old balls they are not using and would like to donate them to our class that would be great Div. 7 (and other children at the playground) all love to play with balls!

March 11/16

It was great meeting with you for conferences even though Thursday's were in the dark!  Never a dull moment at Fairview!

Crazy Hair Day!  As you can see many in Division 7 took this seriously...

Today was Katerina's last day, she will truly be missed but we wish her the best at her new school.  Hope you all have a fun and relaxing break!  See you on Tuesday, March 29th.

March 4th

It's hard to believe it is March!  We have had another very busy week!  We shared our owl books with Mrs. Roberts class and then with both our little and big buddies!  We can't wait to read them with you at our conferences!

Tuesday was Jump Rope for Heart - Div. 6 & 7 had a great workout and a lot of fun.
Below are some 'action shots!'

The 100 day projects that have come in are very creative!  Great work Div. 7!

Mizzie Quinn's rabbit came to visit on Wednesday!  As you can see the students were all very excited to see and hold her!
Makayla also brought in her new puppy Chico.

Today was 100 day and we rotated through 5 different stations - an action station, a building station, math games, 100 day necklace and a bookmark station!   Then this afternoon we made our hundred day snack we had a total of 1600!   It was very yummy!  Thanks!

Our class made the announcements to try to collect several hundreds of food cans for the local food bank.  So far we have 349!  Cans will still be accepted on Mionday!  Thanks again for your support with this community project.

Just a reminder that Grandparents Day is on Wednesday, March 9th in the morning til 11:15 and conferences are in the afternoon and all day Thursday.  If you have not signed up for a conference please do so ASAP   Thanks.  Also Friday is Crazy Hair day!

February 26th - 'An Owl - ly Week!"

,

On Wednesday morning we had an exciting morning of discovery as we dissected owl pellets.  As you can see everyone was very engaged and later when I asked them what they thought the comments were: "Awesome!" "Fantastic!" "Gross but cool!"

Today we made a special owl art project (big thank you to Mrs. Carpenter for her help).  You will get to see these at the conferences as all of the students were very proud of their owls!
Speaking of conferences they are quickly approaching, March 9th and 10th, please be sure to sign up ASAP.  The link is in the useful link section on the front of this blog.

Tuesday, March 1, 2016 is our 'Jumprope for Heart' event.  Please send your child in comfortable clothes and with a water bottle.  All donations can be collected in the envelope provided or can be made online at:  www.jumpropeforheart.ca/  Please mention your child's name and Fairview Elementary if you choose this option.

Hundred day is Friday, March 4th.  Most students took home a piece of paper today to make their 100 day collection, remember the only criteria is that they have 100 of something displayed on the paper or built that they want to bring in.  For those students who forgot their paper they will get it on Monday, this project is optional but I do hope most students choose to participate. The students can bring in their projects any day next week, we will be setting these up in the library and touring them Friday afternoon.
Fairview is also trying to collect as many hundreds of cans as possible for the local food bank.  Please bring in cans and non-perishable food all next week.

February 17th

Just a reminder there is no school tomorrow and Friday for students. Don't forget about the Boston Pizza fundraiser tomorrow night, Feb. 18th.  5 - 8 pm. Help support our PAC to raise money for the new playground!

100 Day is just around the corner and if your child is interested in making a 100 day collection poster please start thinking about them, they would need to be returned the first week of March.  I will be handing out construction paper next week.  March 4th is our hundred day and we are busy planning a special day for the children including intermediate students too this year!  I was also hoping to make a 100 day snack to share in the afternoon, if every child could bring in 100 ??'s on March 4th (Cheerios, marshmallows, candies (nothing with nuts please)  to add to the bowl.  We will count by 100's to discover how many eatible snacks we gave in total!

Division 7 thanks Mason and his family for the generous gifts - a new soccer ball and a basketball!!

Student Absences

Just a reminder if your child is sick or going to be away please email or call the office.
Mrs. Corcoran is spending hours every morning phoning home and unfortunately our clerical hours have already been cut so these extra calls are making her job very difficult!

February 12th

Hope you all have a fun Valentines weekend.   Thank you to Tessa, Cassi, Chase, Ava, Charlotte, Ella and Mallary for the amazing snacks!  It was a big feast! The children all loved handing out and receiving their valentines.

Thanks again to all the parents who drove for our field trip to Alice in Wonderland.  It was an interesting play which some really enjoyed while others another as much but everyone liked different parts of the play and it was an excellent opportunity for them to be exposed to the arts.

I have set up our conference schedule again.  They will be on Wednesday, March in the afternoon and all day Thursday, March 10th.  Please follow this link to book your times.
https://sheralynrt.youcanbook.me/index.jsp

The students once again loved playing in the forest on Thursday as is obvious from these photos.

Just a reminder Fairview PAC is having a fundraiser at Boston Pizza on Feb. 18th from 5 - 8 pm.
If you and your family go out for dinner there we will get 10% of the totals to help raise funds for our playground.  All we need is over 25 people (kids included) to make this happen!  This sounds like a great reason for a family pizza night!!

Reminder that next week there is no school either Thursday or Friday for students.  We will not be doing spelling.

BOOSTER SEATS - TOMORROW!

Please don't forget booster seats for our field trip tomorrow.  We will be leaving by 11:45 and returning back to the school around 2.
Enjoy the sunshine we are having for Family Day!

Feb. 4th

Thank you all so much for sending goodies for our Owl Bake sale.  It was a huge success.  We made $525.00.  Again thanks to Mason and Ava's moms for helping to set up and run the bake sale.

Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow or Monday for Family Day. Please remember that our field trip to Alice in Wonderland is on Tuesday afternoon so all students need to bring in their booster seats.  I sent home a notice for all parent drivers, please be at the school by 11:45 so you can drop your group of students off at the front of the ACT.  Sorry we don't have enough tickets for parents to stay too.  The show is supposed to be an hour so pick up will be at 1:30 but we will confirm this on Tuesday.  Thanks again for your great support with all our field trips. Many teachers were saying how hard it is to get enough parent drivers and I consistently have more than enough - your continued help is really appreciated :)

On Tuesday there will be an assembly and all the primary students will be presenting our owl song.  Parents are welcome to come and watch.  It will be at 8:45.

Could everyone please talk to their child about only going on their own account on Raz Kids we have had some problems with students going on another student's account and using up their stars.  We have talked about it in class but if you could reiterate this at home that hopefully will help.

Next Friday will be our Valentine's Celebration.  All students should bring their valentines in the morning but we won't be having our celebration until after lunch.
Thanks in advance to the following students who signed up to bring snacks.  Tessa (fruit plate). Cassi (veggie tray) Chase (cheese /crackers or small sandwiches)  Ava (sweet treat). Charlotte (popcorn/ chips or pretzels) Ella (other)

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

February 2nd

Tomorrow is our bake sale!  If everyone can bring their dozen baked goodies in the morning we will be setting up for the sale.  Thank you to everyone for your support with this.  A big thank you to Mason and Ava's moms for helping at the sale if you could please be here at 9:45 to set up and then again at 11:45.   We are really hoping that we will make enough money for each class to adopt an owl!  Don't forget to bring your loonies too as I am sure you will all want a special treat too!

January 29th

We have had an exciting week to end January. On Wednesday afternoon we had 4 different owl stations set up in the library that the students went to.  Nest building, owl craft, owl measuring and creating an owl cupcake!    Thank you to Charlotte and Quinn's mom for helping out with these.

Thursday after recess we headed to the forest for gym and many of the children all had lot of fun exploring and building this dam or lodge while others had a game of Minecraft.

Our Bake Sale is next Wednesday, yikes that came up quickly.  As mentioned earlier if every child could please send in a dozen something that would be really appreciated plus if you are available to volunteer for helping set up and selling either at recess or lunch please let me know asap.

The song we put into our Poetry books is also on U-tube and below is the link.
Warning: It will get stuck in your head! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkFSJrNBsDE

Hope you all got the letter on Monday about our spelling program that we started this week.
All students should have their tests in their backpacks, everyone did great this week.
We have changed our library book exchange day to Monday.   Please return all library books on Monday now, except for long weekends.
